Sold is about Lakshmi, a thirteen year old girl living in Nepal. While her family is poor because of her stepfather's gambling, she still is able to somewhat enjoy herself. She has a family and a baby goat. She goes to school. But that all comes crashing down when Lakshmi is sold into prostitution to help with the money. She is thrown into hell, constantly being violated by men, the possibility of death if she leaves constantly a reminder. But then she has the choice to change her life, and it is only her's to decide.
This book was in verse, and I thought the style fit it very well. I got a sense of Lakshmi's character instantly and her story seemed very realistic. While this book was heartbreaking, it was incredibly well written and I can't wait to read McCormick's book Cut.
Sorry for the short review!
