July 4, 09 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson

My friend, Chelsea, had her birthday on August 3, and for her present, I reread her favorite novel 13 Little Blue Envelopes. This was the first MJ book I read and the details were pretty fuzzy in my head. I'm really happy that I reread this one.

13 Little Blue Envelopes is about Ginny, a shy, quiet girl living in New Jersey. She has an eccentric Aunt Peg, who is vibrant and adventurous. Ginny comes alive with Aunt Peg, becomes interesting and different. When Aunt Peg dies, she leaves Ginny thirteen little blue envelopes, the first telling her to get on a plane and fly to Europe. There, Ginny will discover who she is.

This used to be my least favorite MJ book. Now it's become my favorite. It has a distinct plot, travel, funny writing, awesome characters and a surprise ending. I adore this novel and I completely understand why Chelsea loves it as much as she does. My only complaint is that I don't see ANY parent letting their daughter go off to Europe by themself and have no idea who they will be staying with. I adore this novel and can't wait for more MJ in 2010 and the sequel to 13LBE!
